COVID-19 - WISD Home-Based Learning Letter

March 20, 2020

Dear Westwood ISD Parents & Guardians:

During our suspension of operations, student learning continues to be a priority at WISD.  While the health and safety of our students, staff, and community remain our top priority, we also want to help our students to extend their learning as much as they can until the school can resume.

Upon the completion of spring break, our teachers will begin collaborating to create extended activities for students.  Lessons and activities will be provided as an extension designed in an attempt to accommodate all families. While we know this method will not fully replace face-to-face instruction, it will help reduce gaps in learning.

WISD has created a centralized website for Home-Based Learning (HBL) for easy navigation of content during this time.  On the WISD-HBL website, student’s grade-level or the content area will be mapped out to access learning activities. The WISD-HBL website will house online resources for parents, sample learning schedules for your students, and much more.  The goal is to have the website fully updated with learning activities starting Monday, March 30, 2020.  Note that updates will be continually added to the website as the development of content and resources are made available by the teaching staff.  We highly encourage you to check the HBL website each day for activities or videos published by your student’s teacher.

You can access the Home-Based Learning portal at http://bit.ly/WISD-Home-Based-Learning If you have not completed the Family Internet and Device survey, please do so by accessing the following link: https://bit.ly/WISD-Internet-DeviceSurvey

Additionally, paper learning packets filled with activities will be available for families without internet access on your child’s campus [at the front of each campus office] for easy drive-thru pick-up each week on Tuesdays beginning March 31, 2020, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Currently, this is a short-term plan, intended to keep our kids engaged over the next few weeks. If the suspension of operations must extend longer than expected, our Home-Based Learning plan will be adjusted to be more comprehensive and to meet our student’s needs in the best way possible during this unusual time.

Again, I would like to reiterate, we want you to be able to focus on the health and well-being of your family during this time.  We hope that by engaging in activities from each course, our students can stay connected and as on-track as possible. At this time, while we know instruction looks different; however, certain expectations will remain so that learning continues.  For this reason, we fully expect interaction with the content and the instructor.

Our entire team will make a concerted effort to continue meeting the needs of our student(s) during the suspension of operations.  If you have additional questions or concerns regarding home-based learning over the next few weeks please submit to https://bit.ly/WWISD-COVID-19.

Thank you for your continued prayers, support, and understanding during this time.

Christine Bedre

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction and Leadership
